Jiřina Šiklová was the founder of the Department of Social Work and the Centre for Gender Studies at the Faculty of Philosophy and Arts at Charles University. The Centre of Gender Studies commemorates her personality in Czech interviews with some of those who have been inspired by her interest in feminism, gender and civil society in their lives and work. At the same time, The Center announces a competition in honour of Jiřina Šiklová for students in Master’s and Ph.D. study programs: The students are invited to submit articles ranging ideally from 15 to 25 standard pages which apply methodological approaches of gender, queer, or LGBT studies. The objective of the competition is to support students´ activities and their social activism, to encourage them to observe and research social and cultural realities, and make it possible for them to publish in quality academic journals or social reviews. The organizing committee will appreciate courage, clarity and accuracy in themes, research as well as writing itself.

The competition takes place in the academic year 2021 – 2022. The deadline for submission is May 20, 2022. One main prize and two rewards for creative achievement will be awarded by a committee of experts. The results of the competition will be announced at a small festive event early in June 2022. Selected articles in Czech or English will be recommended to Czech journals for peer reviews. Apart from the publication possibilities, the winners will get books from the fields of gender, LGBT or queer studies; and also, tubers of the most beautiful dahlias of the year 2022. The Czech translation of „dahlia“ is „jiřina“ – the first name of Jiřina Šiklová. Articles with attached abstracts in the language of the article can be sent in the course of the 2021 – 2022 academic year, but no later than May 20 to gender@ff.cuni.cz.
