David Drozd, Ph.D.
Associate Professor - Head of Department
He especially focuses on the theory of theatre and drama, production analysis and on the history of Czech theatre directing in the 20th century.
He studied dramaturgy at JAMU´s Theatre Faculty (1996–2000), where he also completed his PhD studies with Professor Bořivoj Srba (2000–2007) with his thesis called Fenomén divadla v myšlení Josefa Šafaříka (The Phenomenon of Theatre in the Thinking of Josef Šafařík). In 2012 he was awarded the degree of associate professor.
From 2004 to 2008 he taught at the Department of Theatre, Film and Media Studies in Olomouc. At present he is the head of the Department of Theatre Studies at the Faculty of Arts of Masaryk University and he also teaches in the PhD studies programme at JAMU´s Theatre Faculty.
He writes for theatre journals – especially Divadelní revue (Czech Theatre Review), Theatralia. At present he is the main researcher of the grant Divadlo jako syntéza umění: Otakar Zich v kontextu moderní vědy a dnešní potenciál jeho konceptů (Theatre as Synthesis of Arts: Otakar Zich in Context of Modern Science and Today´s Potential of his Concepts). In a long-term perspective he focuses on Czech theatre structuralism and the history of theoretical thinking in general.
He contributes to the living theatre with his translations of British and Scottish plays (M. Crimp, S. Kane, D. Harrower, D. Geig, L. Lochhead, S. Glover) that have been staged in leading theatres and published in regional publishing houses. He occasionally works as a dramaturge.
